Kaushambi (UP), May 3 (PTI) Three women died after the embankment of a pond collapsed on them while they were digging soil here on Sunday morning, police said.
Two women were injured in the incident that occurred in the Manjhanpur police station area.
Circle Officer (Manjhanpur) Shivank Singh said that Geeta Devi (35) of Thamba village, her daughter Ankita (6), Uttara Devi (45), Jitiya Devi and Phuliya went to the pond outside their village at around 7.30 am to dig for soil for plastering earthen stoves.
While they were digging, a mound of earth suddenly collapsed, burying all five women. Hearing their cries, nearby villagers rushed to the spot, he said.
Police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and pulled out all five
women with the help of locals. Geeta Devi, Ankita and Uttara Devi died on the spot. Jitiya Devi and Phuliya have been admitted to the district hospital for treatment and are out of danger, Singh said.
