Lakhimpur Kheri(UP), Oct 24 (PTI) A nine-member committee has been formed in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri to oversee measures to curb human-monkey conflict in the urban and rural areas of the district, officials said on Saturday.
Headed by the district magistrate, the committee will frame a standard operating procedure (SOP) in line with the state government’s directives on the matter, they said.
Local bodies, including nagar palikas and nagar panchayats in the urban areas and gram panchayats in the rural belts, will identify the monkey-affected areas, arrange for the capture of problematic monkeys, and register expert catchers.
South Kheri Divisional Forest Officer Tapas Mihir, a committee member, said the local bodies do not require prior
permission to capture monkeys, as the species had been removed from the restricted schedules of the Wildlife (Protection) Act.
The captured monkeys will be released in the designated forest areas after being certified disease-free, he said.
The state government’s directives also propose sterilising problematic male monkeys to control their population.
The measures will be subject to a technical report and plan prepared by the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun. PTI COR CDN ARI
