In 2026, new glacier and snow data has brought the region’s water-security challenge into sharper focus. The Hindu Kush Himalaya supplies water to major river systems, including the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. As glaciers and seasonal snow reserves decline, the consequences could extend from mountain communities to farms, cities and industries across North India.
Himalaya Diwas 2026: Why September 9 Matters
Himalaya Diwas is observed to
raise awareness about the conservation and protection of the Himalayan ecosystem. The day was officially declared as Himalaya Day in Uttarakhand in 2015. Government programmes marking the occasion have focused on conservation, sustainable development, community participation and the responsibilities associated with living in and around the Himalayan ecosystem.
The timing of Himalaya Diwas is increasingly relevant as scientists and environmental institutions document changes in glaciers, snow cover, river flows and high-altitude ecosystems.
The Himalayas are not simply a mountain range. They function as a vast natural water-storage system, holding water as snow and ice before releasing it gradually into river basins.
Latest Glacier Retreat Data: What the Numbers Show
A major 2026 assessment by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) provides some of the clearest recent evidence of accelerating glacier loss across the Hindu Kush Himalaya.
According to ICIMOD’s 2026 glacier reports:
- Hindu Kush Himalaya glaciers have lost about 12% of their total area between 1990 and 2020.
- Estimated ice reserves declined by about 9% over the same period.
- Glacier ice loss has accelerated, with wastage rates doubling since 2000.
- Some glaciers have lost up to 27 metres of ice thickness since 1975.
- The smallest glaciers, those below 0.5 square kilometres, are shrinking particularly rapidly.
- Around three-quarters of the region’s glaciers fall into this smaller size category.
The findings matter beyond the mountains because the Hindu Kush Himalaya is often described as the “Water Towers of Asia”. The region feeds 12 major river systems and supports nearly two billion people downstream.
India’s Glacier Retreat Data
Government data also points to significant glacier retreat across India’s Himalayan river basins.
According to information provided by the Government in 2025, studies by Indian institutions reported an average Hindu Kush Himalayan glacier retreat rate of approximately 14.9 ± 15.1 metres per year. The reported mean retreat rates differed by river basin:
- Indus basin: 12.7 ± 13.2 metres per year
- Ganga basin: 15.5 ± 14.4 metres per year
- Brahmaputra basin: 20.2 ± 19.7 metres per year
The same government response said field measurements from 1975 to 2023 estimated cumulative mass loss of Indian Himalayan glaciers at approximately 26 metres water equivalent.
These numbers should not be interpreted as meaning every glacier is retreating at the same speed. Glacier behaviour varies considerably according to altitude, precipitation, debris cover, aspect, temperature and local geography.
The Snow Problem Is Also Getting Worse
Glaciers are only part of the Himalayan water story. Seasonal snow is another major natural water reservoir.
ICIMOD’s 2026 Snow Update found that snow persistence across the Hindu Kush Himalaya was 27.8% below the long-term average, making 2026 the fourth consecutive year of below-normal snow persistence. Ten of the region’s 12 major river basins recorded below-normal snow persistence.
This matters because snow melts seasonally and contributes water to rivers at times when rainfall may not provide enough supply.
For North India’s water security, the combination of less seasonal snow and shrinking glacier reserves is therefore more important than looking at glacier retreat alone.
Does North India Depend Entirely on Himalayan Glaciers?
No. This is an important distinction.
The Ganga, Indus and Brahmaputra river systems receive water from a combination of rainfall, snowmelt, glacier melt and groundwater. The relative contribution changes from one basin to another and also varies seasonally.
Research has found that glacier melt has a much greater hydrological importance in the Indus basin than in the Ganga and Brahmaputra basins. The Ganga and Brahmaputra are more strongly influenced by monsoon rainfall.
The Government of India’s National Institute of Hydrology has also noted that the Ganga is not totally dependent on glaciers. At Haridwar, rainwater and subsurface flows account for more than 70% of the river’s flow, according to government data.
So, glacier retreat does not mean the Ganga will simply “run dry”. The more immediate concern is how changing snow and ice reserves can alter the timing, reliability and seasonal distribution of water.
Why Glacier Retreat Matters for North Indian Water Supply
The most important issue is not simply the disappearance of ice. It is the changing role of glaciers as natural water reservoirs.
A glacier stores precipitation as ice and snow over long periods and releases part of that water gradually. When temperatures rise, accelerated melting can initially increase runoff in some catchments.
But this effect cannot continue indefinitely.
As glaciers lose mass, the amount of ice available for future melting also declines. Over time, this can reduce the buffering capacity of glacier-fed rivers, particularly during periods when rainfall and seasonal snowmelt are insufficient.
This creates what scientists often describe as a short-term versus long-term water-security problem: more melt can temporarily increase water availability, but sustained ice loss eventually reduces the size of the natural reservoir.
Which North Indian Rivers Are Most Relevant?
The Himalayan cryosphere feeds several major river systems that are critical to northern India.
Indus Basin
The Indus system has a particularly strong dependence on snow and ice melt compared with the Ganga and Brahmaputra basins.
Research indicates that glacier and snowmelt are especially important for water availability in the upper Indus and for irrigation downstream. ICIMOD research has found that around 130 million farmers in the downstream plains of the Indus and northwestern Ganges basin depend on mountain water originating from glacier and snow melt.
This makes changes in Himalayan snow and ice particularly significant for agriculture in the wider Indus system.
Ganga Basin
The Ganga basin receives water from Himalayan snow and glaciers but is also heavily influenced by monsoon rainfall, groundwater and other sources.
The upper Ganga and its tributaries, including glacier-fed rivers originating in Uttarakhand, remain sensitive to changes in snow and ice conditions.
Research on the upper Ganga basin has documented substantial glacier ice loss in several Uttarakhand catchments, including areas associated with the Yamunotri, Bhagirathi, Mandakini and Alaknanda systems.
For the wider northern plains, changes in these headwaters can affect irrigation, hydropower, ecosystems and seasonal river flows.
Brahmaputra Basin
The Brahmaputra is also influenced by Himalayan snow and ice, but monsoon precipitation plays a major role in its overall hydrology.
The basin therefore faces a combined climate challenge: changes in glacier and snow storage interact with changes in rainfall, temperature and extreme weather rather than operating independently.
What Glacier Retreat Could Mean for Farmers
Agriculture is among the sectors most exposed to changes in Himalayan water availability.
Mountain snow and glacier melt can provide water during parts of the growing season when other sources are limited. This is particularly important in the Indus basin and parts of the northwestern Ganga basin.
ICIMOD research estimates that glacier and snow meltwater contributes to a portion of agricultural production in the downstream Indus and Ganga regions. The organisation estimates that meltwater is associated with 9% of wheat production, 15% of rice production, 28% of cotton production and 17% of sugarcane production in the Indus Basin, based on the study’s methodology and period.
This does not mean those crops would disappear if glaciers retreat. Rather, it demonstrates the value of mountain-derived water as part of the broader irrigation system.
What It Means for Cities in North India
The impact is not limited to agriculture.
North Indian cities depend on interconnected systems of rivers, reservoirs, groundwater and rainfall. Himalayan rivers support drinking-water supplies directly or indirectly, while mountain water also contributes to reservoirs and hydropower systems.
As climate change alters the timing of snow and glacier melt, water managers may have to contend with greater uncertainty about when water will arrive, how much will be available and whether it will coincide with periods of peak demand.
This becomes especially important as urban populations grow and groundwater resources face additional pressure.
Glacier Retreat Also Raises Flood Risks
Glacier retreat does not only create a future water-shortage problem.
Warming can also increase risks from glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and other high-altitude hazards.
As glaciers retreat, meltwater can accumulate in lakes dammed by unstable moraine material. If such a natural dam fails, large quantities of water can be released rapidly downstream.
Recent events in the Himalayan region have underscored this danger. In August 2026, a devastating glacier-related disaster in the Nepal Himalaya caused widespread destruction, while authorities and scientists warned about additional risks from unstable lakes and cascading hazards.
India is also monitoring vulnerable glacial lakes. Following the recent disaster, authorities in Sikkim identified 40 high-risk glacial lakes, including 16 in the highest-risk category, and have been working on mitigation and early-warning measures.
Why 2026 Is a Warning Year
The significance of Himalaya Diwas 2026 goes beyond a single year’s glacier measurements.
Two indicators are particularly important:
- First, glacier ice loss is accelerating. ICIMOD’s latest assessment says glacier wastage has doubled since 2000.

What Can India Do?
Experts and government agencies are increasingly focusing on adaptation alongside emissions reduction.
Key priorities include:

- Glacial lake monitoring: High-risk lakes require regular surveillance and early-warning systems.
- Improved water management: States need to plan for greater variability in river flows rather than relying only on historical patterns.

Himalaya Diwas: Why the Mountains Matter to the Plains
The Himalayas can appear distant from the lives of people living in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan or other parts of North India.
But the connection is direct.
The mountains store water. Snow and ice feed rivers. Rivers support farms, cities, industries, ecosystems and power generation. When the mountain climate changes, the consequences can travel hundreds of kilometres downstream.
That is why Himalaya Diwas is not only about protecting glaciers or preserving mountain landscapes. It is also about water security for the plains.
The latest science does not suggest that North India’s rivers will suddenly disappear because glaciers are retreating. Instead, it points to a more complex and urgent challenge: a changing balance between snow, ice, rainfall, groundwater and river runoff.
For India, understanding that changing balance, and preparing for it, is becoming increasingly important.
