Power and air-conditioning stocks traded higher on Monday as rising temperatures and fresh heatwave forecasts across North India buoyed sentiment.
After a brief spell of rain and thunderstorms, several northern states are expected to see temperatures surge beyond 43°C in the coming days, lifting expectations of higher electricity demand.
Shares of NTPC rose 1.31% to Rs 398.75 in late morning trade. Tata Power gained 1.77% to Rs 435.15, while Adani Power advanced 2.62% to Rs 203.70.
Cooling appliance makers also attracted buying interest. Voltas was up 1.10% at Rs 1,456, while Blue Star climbed 2.30% to Rs 1,909.10.
Delhi power tariffs may rise
Separately, electricity consumers in Delhi could face higher power bills in the coming months after the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity
(APTEL) rejected a plea by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) to extend the deadline for clearing dues of around Rs 30,000 crore.
The dues relate to payments owed to Delhi’s power distribution companies under a broader plan to resolve legacy liabilities in the sector. DERC had sought more time to avoid a sharp increase in tariffs, but with the request denied, the existing repayment schedule will now apply.
The issue stems from directions issued by the Supreme Court of India in August 2025, mandating all state regulators to begin clearing pending dues from April 2024 and complete the process by April 2028. The court had also allowed tariff revisions, if required, to facilitate recovery.
IMD issues heatwave alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in Delhi — the first this season — after temperatures rose sharply.
The city recorded a maximum temperature of 40.1°C on Sunday, about three degrees above normal, just days after rainfall had brought temporary relief.
The IMD expects the yellow alert to remain in place for isolated areas from Wednesday to Friday, with temperatures likely to climb to 43°C. Before that, maximum temperatures are expected to hover between 41°C and 42°C on Monday and Tuesday.
Hot north-westerly winds and prolonged sunshine are likely to push temperatures higher across Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Rajasthan in the coming days, further supporting demand for power and cooling solutions.
