Hiten Tejwani and Gauri Pradhan, the iconic on-screen duo who became household names as Karan and Nandini Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, recently opened up about their early television journey in an exclusive podcast. The real-life couple, married since 2004, first met on the sets of a commercial. Fate reunited them on the sets of Kutumb, where their on-screen chemistry gradually blossomed into real-life love.
Later, they returned together in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, becoming one of Indian television’s most memorable jodis.
In their candid conversation, Hiten and Gauri revisited how it all started and shared insights into balancing a personal and professional relationship while working in the same industry.
Destiny’s Role: From
a Breaze Soap Ad to On-Screen Romance Hiten and Gauri firmly believe their meeting was destined. Long before their fame in Kutumb and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, the duo first collaborated for a Breaze soap advertisement. Hiten recalled, the shoot was strictly professional and the two barely interacted at the time. It wasn’t until Kutumb that their paths truly converged.
Hiten shared a charming detail about how their bond formed: “For a long time, Gauri didn’t speak to me, but later, food brought us closer. I would even bring tiffin for her while filming and that’s how our bond slowly grew.”
Kutumb Chemistry: Silence Turned Into Friendship and Love
During Kutumb, Hiten revealed that he and Gauri rarely spoke off-camera. “People never believed us when we said we don’t talk,” he admitted. Despite their differences, the pair’s on-screen chemistry appeared natural and fans assumed they were inseparable in real life. Over time, their initial silence developed into a friendship, which eventually evolved into a romantic relationship, culminating in marriage and completing their real-life fairytale.
Returning to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi: A Natural Choice
When asked about joining the new season of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Gauri was decisive: “Soachne ki kya baat hai, it is like our family so we agreed immediately.” Hiten added, “Gauri wants to know much more about the character and she has always been like that. But I never ask. Phone aata hai toh mein kehta hu chalo kab karna hai?” Both agreed that reprising their roles was an easy decision.
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2: Evolving With Time
Discussing how the new season differs from the original, Gauri pointed out that aside from social media’s influence, much remains consistent. Hiten observed that while the first season reflected the early 2000s, the new season resonates with today’s audiences and modern issues. Gauri elaborated, “Time ke hisaab se storyline progressive ho gaya hai after 20 years but it feels like humne 20 years ka break leke wapis shuru kiya hai.” They agreed that the essence of the show remains intact, while the storytelling has matured to suit contemporary times.
TV to Films: Breaking the Myth
Addressing the common misconception about TV actors struggling in films, Gauri said, “If you are talented, you will shine anywhere.” She emphasised that many of today’s successful film stars began their careers on television. Hiten agreed, noting that while transitions were harder in the past, OTT platforms have bridged the gap. He also mentioned that television remains irreplaceable for honing his craft: “It keeps me in practice daily with my voice and acting skills, something films cannot provide regularly.”
Hiten’s Career Philosophy: Importance of Strong Roles Over Leads
Hiten shared that his longevity in television is due to taking on diverse roles, not just lead characters. “Mujhe acche roles karne hai, important character karunga, important roles karunga. Necessary nahi hai ki woh lead hi hoga,” he explained. He stressed that the strength of a role matters more than the title and revealed that even when not working, he continually learns new skills, anticipating future opportunities.
Pavitra Rishta: A Role Close to Hiten’s Heart
Talking about Pavitra Rishta, Hiten reflected on his role as Manav. Joining the show mid-way was initially nerve-wracking, but he gave the character his all and remains grateful to Ektaa Kapoor for trusting him. He said, “Many fans still identify me as ‘Manav’ even today. For me, that character will always be special.”
Ekta Kapoor’s Dedication: A Key to On-Screen Magic
Hiten and Gauri recalled Ekta Kapoor’s meticulous approach on set. She often stayed for days to ensure a scene was perfect, providing detailed narrations and specific instructions to match her vision. The duo credited her attention to detail for much of their on-screen success, acknowledging that her guidance helped bring out the best in their performances.
