US President Donald Trump remains in “excellent health” and is fully capable of carrying out his duties, according to a medical report released by the White House on Friday. However, his doctor has advised him to lose weight, exercise more and follow dietary measures to improve his overall health.
The report was issued after Trump, 79, underwent a routine medical examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre near Washington earlier this week.
In a three page memo, White House physician and US Navy Captain Sean Barbabella said the president showed strong heart, lung and neurological function and remained fit to serve as both commander in chief and head of state.
“President Trump remains in excellent health, demonstrating strong cardiac,
pulmonary, neurological and overall physical function,” Barbabella wrote.
Doctor Recommends Lifestyle Changes
While describing Trump’s health as strong overall, the physician said preventive advice was provided during the examination. The recommendations included maintaining a healthy diet, increasing physical activity, continuing weight loss efforts and taking a low dose aspirin as part of cardiovascular care.
Trump, who turns 80 next month, currently takes three medications. Two are used to control cholesterol levels, while the third is aspirin for heart disease prevention.
The report showed that Trump weighs 238 pounds (108 kilograms), up from the 224 pounds (101.6 kilograms) recorded during his last annual physical examination in April last year. He stands six feet three inches (191 centimetres) tall.
Report Addresses Bruising On Hands
The medical assessment comes amid growing public discussion about Trump’s health, including visible bruising on his hands and instances where he appeared drowsy during public meetings.
According to the report, an examination of Trump’s hands found bruising that was consistent with minor irritation of soft tissue caused by frequent handshaking while taking aspirin, which can increase bruising.
“Examination of the dorsal hands revealed ecchymosis (bruising), consistent with minor soft tissue irritation related to frequent handshaking in the setting of aspirin use for cardiovascular prevention,” the memo stated.
Trump Says Exam Went ‘Perfectly’
The latest checkup was Trump’s third medical examination since returning to office last year.
Shortly after the appointment, Trump shared his own assessment of the results on his Truth Social platform, saying the medical examination had gone “PERFECTLY”.
The White House released the report as questions about the president’s health continue to attract attention ahead of his 80th birthday next month.
