An Uber driver asked his passenger to pay Rs 40 extra for the toll charge, but she denied it, which led to a heated exchange between them. The driver, who recorded the entire incident unfold, later shared it on social media, leaving people divided over who was responsible for paying the additional amount.
The incident occurred right after the woman reached her destination in an Uber cab and was about to make payment for the ride. In the video shared on X, she asked the driver for the QR code to pay the fare online. He handed her his QR code, which prompted the woman to ask for the app’s code. The driver then asked her to pay an additional Rs 40 for the toll.
She refused to pay the extra amount, saying that paying the toll charges is not her responsibility.
The driver argued that he followed the route suggested on the map and asked why he should pay the toll out of pocket. The woman repeated that toll charges were not her problem and that he should ask Uber to reimburse the amount.
The driver further told her that when toll charges are paid through FASTag, the amount is reflected in the fare. In her case, he had to pay the toll in cash, and therefore the passenger is needed to reimburse the amount. The woman, however, remained firm and refused to pay the toll separately. She then said she would call her daughter, who would make the payment through the Uber app.

Their exchange has since gone viral on the platform, prompting a discussion online about who should bear toll charges during such app-based cab rides. While some users sided with the passenger, others defended the driver, saying that tolls are generally the passenger’s responsibility.

A user said, “The driver is mistaken. Any applicable toll charges are already included in the Uber fare/bill. You do not need to pay the toll separately to the driver.”
“She is right. Uber knows the route taken by the driver, and if it has toll charges, it always includes toll charges in the bill,” mentioned another.
An individual quipped, “The woman is right. You are not authorised to collect toll from her. Uber bill says including toll. So don’t try to fool others by playing the victim card.”
“For outstations they charge. But 40 rupees is not an outstation charge. Outstations start from 80 or so. It’s internal tolls which are included,” someone else said.
Meanwhile, a person pointed out, “It’s just 40 rupees; sometimes people fight for this shit as if it makes a huge difference to their lives.”
“Uber clearly says that the charge will be borne by the passenger for any toll tax that comes in the way. Regardless of cash or online payments,” a different individual shared.
