Puducherry Assembly Elections 2026: As exit polls will be announced today (April 29), the assembly elections in Puducherry have once again turned the spotlight on one of India’s smallest legislatures with some of its biggest political intrigue. With just 30 elected seats, the Union Territory often punches above its weight in terms of drama, shifting loyalties, coalition arithmetic and personality-driven contests. This year’s election, held in a single phase on April 9, is no different.

The direct fight is between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the All India NR Congress (AINRC) and BJP and the opposition bloc led by the Congress along with regional partners. The race
also carries an added twist as it marks the electoral debut of actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which has entered the fray hoping to shake up established equations. The results will be declared on May 4, but before that, exit polls are expected to offer the first glimpse of where this compact but politically volatile territory may be headed.
Why Puducherry’s 30 Seats Matter So Much
Unlike larger states where a few seats may not alter the overall picture, every constituency in Puducherry can shift power. A swing of two or three seats can decide whether a government is stable, vulnerable or dependent on post-poll negotiations.

The Puducherry assembly has 30 elected members, which means the halfway mark is 16. In a House this small, defections, alliances, nominated members and individual heavyweight candidates often become decisive factors. That is why Puducherry elections are watched far beyond their size.
Puducherry’s Big Political Question
The most important political question for the assembly elections in Puducherry is: Can Chief Minister N Rangaswamy’s ruling alliance retain power or can the Congress-led opposition reclaim lost ground?
N Rangaswamy remains one of Puducherry’s most influential political figures but anti-incumbency and opposition consolidation could test the NDA. On the other side, Congress hopes to regain relevance in a territory where it once dominated politics. TVK’s arrival adds unpredictability as even if it does not win many seats, it could split votes in urban and youth-heavy constituencies.

Constituencies To Watch
Thattanchavady: The Clash Of Titans- One of the most high-profile battles is in Thattanchavady, where former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam is challenging sitting Chief Minister N Rangaswamy. Vaithilingam is among Puducherry’s most experienced politicians, having served as chief minister twice, speaker, minister and leader of opposition. If he defeats the chief minister, it would be among the most symbolic outcomes of the election.
Mannadipet: Test For BJP’s A Namassivayam- Senior BJP leader and Puducherry Home Minister A Namassivayam is contesting from Mannadipet. Once a Congress state chief, he switched parties dramatically in 2021 before winning on a BJP ticket. His result will be seen as a referendum on BJP’s expansion strategy in Puducherry.
Mudaliarpet: Spotlight On A Johnkumar- Minority Affairs Minister A Johnkumar is contesting from Mudaliarpet. A politician who has moved through multiple constituencies and parties, his race is closely watched as a test of personal vote base versus party identity.
Raj Bhavan: Prestige Battle- Puducherry BJP chief VP Ramalingam is contesting from Raj Bhavan in a multi-cornered fight involving Congress, DMK, NTK and TVK candidates.
This seat is being viewed as a prestige contest for the BJP organisation.
Villianur: Opposition Stronghold?- DMK leader R Siva, the current leader of opposition, remains a major face in Villianur. A win here would strengthen the opposition’s claim that it retains deep roots in the territory.
Karaikkal South: Southern Test Case- Senior DMK leader AMH Nazeem is contesting from Karaikkal South, a constituency where he has enjoyed a long political presence. The Karaikal region often behaves differently from mainland Puducherry, making these seats critical in close contests.

Lawspet: TVK’s Experiment- Former Puducherry BJP chief V Saminathan is contesting on a TVK ticket from Lawspet against AINRC’s VP Sivakolundhu. This is one of the most interesting symbol battles of the election as an established BJP face is now carrying Vijay’s banner.
