In a tragic incident two first-year BSc Nursing students were run over by a speeding Vande Bharat Express near the Chikkabanavara railway station.
The incident left both victims dead on the spot, their
bodies severely dismembered on the tracks.
The deceased have been identified as 19-year-old Sterlin Eliza Shaji and 20-year-old Justin Joseph, both natives of Pathanamthitta district in Kerala. The duo was studying at Sapthagiri College and reportedly lived in a nearby paying guest accommodation.
According to preliminary information, the students were crossing the railway track on their way back to their PG when the accident occurred. Railway officials said the Vande Bharat train was approaching at high speed when the two came onto the tracks. Investigators suspect the possibility of an accident but have not ruled out suicide, and are verifying both angles.
Officers from the Bengaluru Rural Railway Police and Yeshwanthpur Railway Police Station have opened a UDR case and are gathering details about the students’ movements and background. Railway department authorities have also begun an internal inspection into the circumstances leading up to the incident.
The bodies have been shifted to MS Ramaiah Hospital. Police have informed the families, who are currently travelling to Bengaluru.
