Harmanpreet Kaur and India will begin their Women’s T20 Asia Cup campaign against Thailand on Sunday, looking to put behind them a disappointing run in the shortest format and address lingering concerns over consistency and form.
India have been the dominant force in the Women’s T20 Asia Cup over the past decade, lifting the trophy three times in five editions since the tournament adopted the T20 format in 2016-17. However, their recent performances have offered little comfort, with the team entering the competition under considerable pressure.
India have suffered nine defeats in 16 T20Is this year, with their latest setback coming against Australia in the Women’s T20 World Cup. That loss brought their campaign to an early end at the group stage.
The spotlight will also remain firmly on Harmanpreet, whose own form and future in T20 cricket have been subjects of discussion. India now enter an important stretch of their calendar, with the Asia Cup followed by next month’s Asian Games in Japan, where they will be expected to challenge for the title.
What: India vs Thailand (Asia Cup 2026)
When: August 30 (Sunday)
Where: Dubai International Cricket Stadium
Start Time: 8 PM IST
In the eight-team Women’s T20 Asia Cup, India have been drawn in Group A alongside Thailand, Hong Kong and Pakistan.
Harmanpreet produced an important innings against Australia in the World Cup, but her overall inconsistency with the bat was among the concerns from an underwhelming campaign, particularly as India struggled when confronted by higher-ranked opposition.
The absence of dependable batter Jemimah Rodrigues for both the Asia Cup and Asian Games leaves India with a significant gap to fill. Pratika Rawal has been brought into the squad, although her inclusion does not completely resolve the need for a batter capable of accelerating proceedings through the middle order.
India will continue to bank on the established opening combination of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. The responsibility will then shift to the batters at No. 3 and below to ensure the strong starts are converted into sustained scoring momentum.
Fielding is another area that India will be keen to improve. Their previous outing in the format was undermined by a series of missed opportunities close to the boundary, making sharper work in the field an important priority for the team management.
Deepti Sharma will once again spearhead India’s spin department, with Shree Charani, the leading wicket-taker at the T20 World Cup, joined by Radha Yadav and Prema Rawat in sharing the workload.
The pace department also offers plenty of experience and depth. Renuka Singh Thakur will lead the seam attack, with Kranti Gaud, Arundhati Reddy and Nandani Sharma providing support.
Thailand, meanwhile, will enter the contest with confidence after opening their campaign with a hard-fought win over Hong Kong. Their batting innings never gathered significant momentum as they posted 120 for nine, but they compensated with an effective bowling and fielding display to hold Hong Kong to 114 for seven.
Captain Naruemol Chaiwai anchored the innings with 43, while Onnicha Kamchomphu stood out with three wickets for 27 runs and Phannita Maya claimed two for 22.
