A devastating heatwave that swept across France in late June has left 5,764 excess deaths, according to updated data released by the country’s public health agency, offering one of the clearest signs yet of the mounting health risks posed by extreme temperatures in Europe.
The revised analysis shows that 21,674 people died between June 17 and July 2, compared with the 15,910 deaths normally expected during the same period a 36% rise in mortality.
Health officials said the figures are based on “excess deaths”, a statistical measure used to estimate the overall impact of an event by comparing actual deaths with historical averages.
While not every death was directly caused by heatstroke, experts say prolonged exposure to extreme heat likely worsened
pre-existing heart, lung and kidney conditions, leading to a sharp rise in fatalities.

Although European countries strengthened heat-health warning systems after the 2003 heatwave, which claimed more than 70,000 lives, the latest mortality data suggests extreme heat remains one of the region’s most serious public health threats.
The updated figures from France serve as another reminder that heatwaves are no longer isolated weather events. Increasingly, they are emerging as one of Europe’s deadliest consequences of a warming climate.
