Cynthia Erivo is breaking several records as the award season begins, but as per new reports, the actress will be missing out on the 83rd Golden Globe Award. The Golden Globe is considered a boost in momentum for Oscar campaigns and Cynthia has been nominated for one of the big categories – Best Actress — Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, for Wicked: For Good.
This is the second time Erivo has been nominated in the same category; she received the nod last year for Wicked. This second nod makes her the first Black woman to be nominated in the category twice.
Cynthia Erivo to skip 83rd Golden Globe Awards
As per Variety, Cynthia Erivo will not be attending the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, which is taking place on January 11. The report states that
the actress is busy and “deep in production” of her West End show in London, titled Dracula, which will run from February 4 to May 31. Erivo stars in the one-woman stage adaptation of the Gothic horror story, where she will play 23 characters, including Dracula.
The actress told Variety in December, when the nominations were announced, that it was just the beginning for her and hoped she could inspire other women as well. She said, “I hope there are many more to come, not just for me, but for other Black women. I hope it’s just the beginning. What a wonderful thing to do that and be a part of changing history a little bit and hopefully open up doors for someone else too.”
Cynthia Erivo talks about playing 23 characters
Erivo will be returning to the West End after her Broadway debut as Celie in the musical revival of The Color Purple, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Talking about playing 23 characters in Dracula, she told Wonderland Magazine.
She said, “I haven’t been back to stage for such a long time. Since 2015’s The Color Purple. The first time I really did anything that felt like a stage was Jesus Christ Superstar, and that was only three nights. So this is probably the first time I’m going back to a theatre, on stage to do a lengthy run of sorts. And I’m f**king petrified. I really am. I’m very scared. But I’m also like – I don’t know, is this sadistic of me – but I’m really excited about it as well. It’s absolutely nonsensical and insane, and I kept trying to resist it for the longest time.”
