Twin sisters from the United Kingdom made a surprising discovery decades after birth when DNA tests revealed that they do not share the same biological father. Michelle and Lavinia Osbourne, now 49, were born just minutes apart in Nottingham in 1976.
The sisters found out the truth only recently after taking at-home DNA tests. While both women share the same mother, the results showed they are actually half-sisters biologically.
According to a report by BBC, the case is considered extremely rare and is linked to a condition called heteropaternal superfecundation. This happens when two eggs released during the same cycle are fertilised by sperm from different men.
DNA Test Changes Everything
The sisters grew up together and spent most of their lives
believing they had the same parents. They also shared a difficult childhood and often depended on each other for emotional support.
Speaking to the BBC, Lavinia admitted the results were hard to process. “Maybe subconsciously I knew,” she said. She added, “She was the one thing that belonged to me, and then she wasn’t.”
Michelle, however, reacted differently to the discovery. “I wasn’t surprised. It’s super weird, super odd, super rare – but it makes sense,” she said.
Questions about their father had existed for years. Their mother had earlier identified a man named James as their father, but he was mostly absent from their lives.
Years later, Michelle began doubting the connection after seeing his photograph and feeling there was no physical resemblance between them.
Sisters Later Meet Biological Fathers
Michelle eventually took a DNA test, which confirmed James was not her biological father. Further searches led her to another man named Alex, whom she later met in person.
Although she noticed similarities in appearance, Michelle said they did not develop a close relationship afterward.
Lavinia was initially hesitant about taking a DNA test herself. But when she finally did, the results showed that Alex was not her father either.
That discovery confirmed the sisters had different biological fathers despite being twins.
Michelle later helped trace Lavinia’s biological father, Arthur. The sisters eventually met him in London.
Lavinia said she quickly felt a connection with Arthur and now meets him regularly. She described it as a feeling of belonging she had been searching for for years.
Arthur also welcomed Michelle warmly and reportedly told her she could still think of him as a father figure.
According to reports, their mother passed away on the same day Michelle received her DNA test results, leaving many questions about the past unanswered.
