India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav scored 32 runs from 22 balls in the first T20I against New Zealand, which is taking place at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. During his 32-run knock on Wednesday (January 21), Surya slammed 4 fours and 1 six for the world No. 1 T20I team and in the process also became the fourth Indian cricketer after Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan to score 9000 runs in T20s.
Surya, who will captain India in the T20 World Cup 2026, needed 25 runs in his 347th T20 match to join the 9000-run club, and he achieved the objective by hitting Ish Sodhi for a four on the fourth ball of the 10th over of India’s innings.
Kohli holds the record for scoring the most runs in T20s by an Indian batter. In 414
matches for three teams – India, Delhi and Royal Challengers Bengaluru – he has amassed a total of 13,543 runs. Rohit Sharma is second on the list with 12,248 runs in 463 matches for Mumbai, India, India A, Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers.
Former opening batter Shikhar Dhawan also scored more than 9000 runs in T20s. The stylish left-handed batter played 334 T20 matches from 2007 to 2024 and amassed a total of 9797 runs.
Surya, on the other hand, now has 9007 runs to his credit in 321 innings of 347 T20 matches.

The world record for scoring the most runs in T20s is in the name of Chris Gayle. The former West Indies skipper played 463 T20 matches for over a dozen teams and scored 14,562 runs in 455 innings. His former West Indies teammate Kieron Pollard is second on the list with 14,482 runs in 735 T20 matches, and England’s Alex Hales has scored 14,449 runs in 523 innings of 528 T20 matches.
The ongoing first T20I match between India and New Zealand in Nagpur is the 100th T20I for Suryakumar. The Mumbai-based right-handed batter is only the fourth cricketer after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya to play 100 or more T20I matches for the world’s No. 1 T20I team.
