On Sunday (October 19) at Perth’s Optus Stadium, when Indian and Australian players will face off in the first ODI of the three-match series, all eyes will be on the performances of former India captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The duo, who retired from T20Is on June 29, 2024, following India’s T20 World Cup title win and from Tests in May 2025, will play their first match for India since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final, which India won by getting the better of New Zealand at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on March 9.
In that fixture, Rohit top-scored for the Men in Blue and won the Player of the Match award as well. But a lot has changed since then. That time, he was the captain of the Indian team in Tests and ODIs, but now he is
not part of the leadership group in either format.
Kohli, on the other hand, scored a century for the Indian team in the Champions Trophy Group A match against Pakistan on February 23 and played a knock of 84 runs against Australia in the first semifinal on March 4.
He is the world No. 5 batter in ICC ODI rankings, whereas Rohit is in third place.
And since Rohit and Kohli are back in action after a long period, fans will expect a big show from both of them. But can they really deliver after remaining out of action for more than four months? Well, if you go by their records against Australia, then surely the upcoming three matches in Australia will be a treat for fans.
In the list of batters with the most runs in ODIs against Australia, Kohli is in 2nd place with 2451, and Rohit takes the third position with 2407 runs in 46 matches.
