Angelina Jolie has described her divorce from Brad Pitt as “emotionally difficult,” shedding new light on her struggles following their separation. In a recent court filing at the Los Angeles Superior
Court, the Maleficent star discussed the personal and financial aftermath of their split, as part of the former couple’s ongoing legal battle over Château Miraval, their vineyard estate in France.
According to Page Six, Jolie’s declaration came in response to Pitt’s motion demanding she turn over private communications about the Miraval dispute. The actress also requested that Pitt reimburse her $33,000 (approximately Rs 29 lakh) in legal fees, which she says were incurred while responding to his motion.
Jolie Reveals She Gave Up Properties To Ease Tensions
In her filing, Jolie stated that after initiating divorce proceedings, she willingly handed control of their Los Angeles home and the French estate to Pitt. “The events leading to my need to separate from my ex-husband were emotionally difficult for me and our children,” she wrote. “Upon filing for divorce, I left him control (and full residency) of our family homes in Los Angeles and at Miraval, without compensation, which I hoped would make him calmer in his dealings with me after a difficult and traumatic period.”
The Oscar-winning actress said she and her six children — Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne — have “never again set foot” at Miraval due to its association with painful memories. Jolie added that she had to find new housing immediately after leaving Pitt, first renting before finding a permanent home for her family.
Chateau Miraval Dispute Intensifies
The legal battle stems from Jolie’s 2021 sale of her stake in Château Miraval to the Stoli Group’s wine division, which Pitt claims violated their agreement. Jolie has maintained that she was under no legal obligation to seek his consent and needed the funds as her savings were tied up in the property.
Reflecting on the estate’s emotional significance, she said, “Miraval was one of the first major investments we made together… We were married there, I spent part of my pregnancy there, and I brought our twin children home there from the hospital.”
Jolie’s legal team claims Pitt’s refusal to drop his motion has caused unnecessary financial strain. The dispute remains one of several unresolved legal issues between the former couple, who separated in 2016 and were declared legally single in 2019.
