Shraddha Kapoor’s upcoming film Eetha is in the news for more than just its teaser. Days after the first glimpse was released, the film has run into controversy, with objections being raised over its title.
According to a TV9 Marathi report, the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Film and Cultural Department has objected to the title Eetha. The group believes the title does not do justice to the legacy of legendary Tamasha artist and Lavani dancer Vithabai Narayangaonkar.
The department has questioned why the film was not named Vitha or Vithabai. According to its members, Vithabai was one of Maharashtra’s most respected folk artists, and the title should reflect her contribution.
The report also states that Vithabai’s family has supported the demand.
Her sons, Kailash Narayangaonkar and Rajesh Narayangaonkar, along with her grandson Mohit Narayangaonkar, are backing the NCP’s stand.

Babasaheb Patil, Maharashtra State President of the NCP’s Film and Cultural Department, said it is the party’s responsibility to ensure that Vithabai’s life is shown with dignity and respect.
So far, director Laxman Utekar and production house Maddock Films have not responded to the controversy.
Based on the extraordinary life of legendary Marathi Lavani dancer Vithabai Narayangaonkar, Eetha celebrates the journey of one of Maharashtra’s most influential folk artists. Revered for her iconic Lavani and Tamasha performances, Vithabai captivated generations of audiences and was honoured by the President of India in 1957 and 1990 for her immense contribution to India’s folk theatre tradition.
The teaser shows one of the most remarkable moments from her life. Shraddha Kapoor is seen performing on stage while heavily pregnant. When she goes into labour, she delivers her baby backstage, cuts the umbilical cord with a stone and returns to complete the performance.
According to historical records, the performance was stopped soon after the delivery so Vithabai could rest. The film has been shot at several locations, including Madh Island in Mumbai, Solapur, Aundhewadi, Satara, Nashik and Bhor.
Directed by Laxman Utekar, Eetha also stars Randeep Hooda and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub. The film is set to release in theatres on August 28.
The film also marks Shraddha Kapoor’s reunion with producer Dinesh Vijan after the blockbuster success of the Stree franchise. It further brings together the successful producer-director duo of Dinesh Vijan and Laxman Utekar, who previously delivered the massive hit Chhaava.
