Age may slow many people down, but filmmaker Singeetham Srinivasa Rao seems determined to prove that creativity has no deadline. Even at 94, the veteran director continues to take on ambitious projects, leaving audiences and colleagues impressed by his dedication to cinema.
His latest Telugu film, Sing Geetham, hit theatres on June 12 and has already become a talking point for more than just its unusual storyline. The film’s production journey has drawn attention after it emerged that Rao completed the project in just 77 shooting days.
A source close to the production told India Today, “At 94, Singeetam Srinivasa Rao has completed Sing Geetham in just 77 days. Having crossed 90+ years, his passion and commitment to storytelling continue to inspire
everyone on set.”
Produced by filmmaker Nag Ashwin, Sing Geetham presented several challenges during filming, particularly because of Rao’s age and health. Speaking to SCREEN, Ashwin shared how the team adapted to ensure the veteran director could continue working comfortably.
According to Ashwin, Chennai schedules went relatively smoothly, while filming in Hyderabad proved more demanding. On occasions when Rao was unable to travel, the team arranged a virtual monitoring system at his residence.
“When the director could not travel, a virtual monitor was set up at his home, and Singeetham guided actors and crew through a headset, watching the shoot remotely and directing from a distance. For the majority of the production, however, he was physically present on set,” Ashwin explained.
The filmmaker also faced a health setback during the final phase of production. Ashwin revealed that what initially seemed like a simple cough later developed into an infection.
“He lost a little weight, but that didn’t dampen his spirits. His passion is infectious,” Ashwin said, recalling how Rao remained focused on completing the film despite the challenges.
Beyond its production story, Sing Geetham stands out for its experimental format. The film follows Prathap, a young man who travels to a secluded village named Kuberapuram hoping to build a better future. However, he soon finds himself caught up in a series of mysterious events linked to an unusual curse.
The curse has a unique effect on the villagers — nobody speaks normally. Instead, every conversation is expressed through song.
Staying true to that concept, the film features all its dialogues in sung form, making it a full-fledged musical narrative. The project reflects the kind of unconventional storytelling that Rao has long been known for throughout his career. Sing Geetham stars newcomers Ayaan, Ahilya Bamroo and Shalini Kondepudi in key roles. Music for the film, including the songs and background score, has been composed by Devi Sri Prasad.
