Adventure sports have grown increasingly popular in India, especially in tourist places. From paragliding to bungee jumping to river rafting and ziplining, these sports have garnered immense popularity among those who want to try out something new on their trip. But certain accidents have also often raised concerns about poorly trained operators and a lack of regulation in the sector.
A video that surfaced on X has once again ignited debate on the safety of such adventure sports in India. The clip, filmed in a mountainous region, showed a young boy and operators attempting to take off from a hillside. Several people were seen preparing the paraglider, but they struggled to lift off properly due to wind conditions and fell near a bushy area.
“Mere
saamne se ek ladka jaa raha tha aur ye bhai do baar gira neeche, ekdam pahad se neeche (A guy was going right in front of us to paraglide, and this guy literally fell twice straight down the mountain),” a woman who recorded the video, seemingly in Nainital, said. She then explained that if there had been no bushes or the paragliding parachute, something more serious could have happened to the young boy.
“Never ever do adventure activities in India. This is one of the most unregulated sectors where almost anyone can start an adventure sports business and it goes completely unmonitored,” the caption of the post read. “Just look at this video. The weather, the takeoff point, everything made it obvious what the outcome was going to be, yet they still went ahead. People really don’t care until something goes horribly wrong.”

“Zero Safety, Zero Accountability”
In no time, the video went viral, with many people echoing the same concerns regarding adventure sports anywhere in the world, while others questioned if authorities are regulating such operators before allowing customers to participate.
“This is what I have voiced openly. These are unregulated sectors where making money is the prime criterion. Everything and anything goes as long as there is no incident. There are no safety rules, no checks and balances. It’s an open field. Anyone comes with some bare essentials of gliding and starts off as an expert.
I had a firsthand unsavoury experience, after which I decided this was it,” a user said.
Another quipped, “Why are you saying as India? This happens in every country. Did you miss what happened in Mexico recently? There is no such thing called adventure sports. Just don’t do it.”
“How is this even considered a suitable paragliding launch site? I can understand an experienced solo pilot using such a terrain, but how do you expect an inexperienced passenger to run downhill over such an uneven, vegetation-covered slope before takeoff?” someone else asked.
Another person questioned, “Completely agree. Zero safety standards, zero accountability. How many paragliding accidents in Manali before someone takes notice?”
A different individual commented, “I’m okay been called a coward for not trying out such activities.”
