Kolkata, Jun 6 (PTI) The West Bengal government on Saturday dissolved the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) with immediate effect and appointed its commissioner as the administrator to oversee the civic body’s affairs until elected representatives assume office, according to an official order.
The move came after Trinamool Congress leader Krishna Chakraborty resigned as the mayor of the BMC on Thursday, citing personal reasons.
The government said the move necessitated the appointment of an administrator to prevent any disruption in civic services and municipal administration.
“With the dissolution of the said Corporation, an administrative vacuum has occurred in the said Corporation, which is required to be filled up to ensure smooth running
of the civic services in the said Corporation area for public interest,” the order stated.
Invoking provisions of the West Bengal Municipal Corporation Act, 2006, the state government appointed the Commissioner of BMC as the Administrator with immediate effect.
The administrator will exercise all powers and perform all duties that were previously vested in the corporation, the Mayor-in-Council, committee of the corporation and the mayor, it said.
The arrangement will remain in force for a period not exceeding six months or until newly elected councillors take charge, whichever is earlier.
Meanwhile, the state on Saturday also appointed IAS officer Tejasvi Rana as the Commissioner of the Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC).
Rana, a 2017-batch IAS officer who was serving as Additional District Magistrate in North 24 Parganas, has been posted as Commissioner of the Howrah Municipal Corporation, an order issued in this connection stated. PTI SCH NN
