Chandigarh, Jul 23 (PTI) The family of Indian Army’s Naib Risaldar Virender Singh donated his organs after he was declared brain dead at Command Hospital (Western Command), Chandimandir, giving six families a new lease of life.
Officials said Virender Singh suffered a brain stroke while deployed at an altitude of 16,000 feet in Ladakh.
He received immediate medical assistance and was airlifted to the Command Hospital on July 16. Despite intensive treatment, he did not recover and was declared brain dead on July 21.
Officials said after his wife, Kusum, consented to organ donation, two kidneys, the liver, both lungs and both corneas were retrieved for transplantation.
The Army said this was the first successful lung retrieval in the history of Command
Hospital (Western Command), marking a significant medical milestone.
The organs were allocated through the national organ-sharing network.
It said one kidney and both corneas were transplanted at Command Hospital, while the second kidney was sent to the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), Haryana.
The liver was transported to Army Hospital (Research and Referral), New Delhi, and the lungs were sent to KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad.
A green corridor was created through the coordinated efforts of the military police, civil administration and local authorities to ensure the timely transportation of the organs, it said.
The Indian Army paid tribute to Naib Risaldar Virender Singh’s sacrifice and praised his wife’s selfless decision, saying their gesture would inspire many more people to pledge organ donation. PTI VSD ASD ASD
