Actor Mahima Chaudhry has endured a series of personal and professional upheavals over the years, from a life-altering accident on a film set to legal disputes that stalled her career, and later, a public battle with breast cancer. In a recent conversation, the actor opened up about the lesser-known struggles that shaped her journey in Bollywood.
‘I Was Taken To Court And Thrown Out Of Films’
Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, Mahima reflected on how quickly circumstances turned against her soon after her debut. She revealed that contractual confusion led to severe professional consequences.
“A lot of them. After my first film, I was taken to court, I was thrown out of so many films, because it was said that she is under contract with Mukta, which wasn’t
true. I had my accident, then I sat at home for a year.”
The actor explained that this phase forced her into an unexpected pause at a time when her career should have been taking off.
Refusing To Be A ‘Lucky Mascot’
Mahima shared that when she returned to films, she was often offered minor appearances rather than full-fledged roles. While many of those films turned into hits, she resisted being typecast.
“I started doing bit appearances, all those films became a hit…even when I was doing just a song. People then started offering me just a single song, I said no to them. I was called the lucky mascot but I want to do more things.”
Her determination eventually paid off as she went on to work with prominent filmmakers. “Then I got back again, did films with Priyadarshan, Raj Santoshi, Lajja, etc.”
‘67 Pieces Of Glass Were Removed From My Face’
One of the most harrowing chapters of Mahima’s life unfolded during the shooting of Dil Kya Kare (1999), when she met with a serious car accident that left her face severely injured.
“There were 67 tiny glass pieces, then they are scraped out under the microscope. The next day, the face is more swollen and out of shape. My friends were laughing at my facial injury, they thought I had a fight with someone and I am lying.”
The recovery process was long and emotionally draining. “At that time, I didn’t know what I was going to do in life, it was difficult. I couldn’t go out in sunlight, you have to wait for the stitches, then they heal so you have to keep it moist.”
Turning Scars Into Style
Mahima revealed how the film’s costume team had to creatively conceal her injuries while she completed pending work.
“Sunlight and UV rays can cause scarring. I completed pending 1-2 songs in between, but couldn’t give full fledged rights to anyone to go anywhere outdoors and work. My costume designer had to put diamond dots on the scars, especially left side which was more swollen.”
What began as a necessity unexpectedly became a trend. “It became a fad after that, people actually started selling it.”
What’s Next For Mahima Chaudhry
