'No Medicine Without My Consent': Sonam Wangchuk's Wife After He Was Taken To Hospital From Protest Site

Hours after activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken to hospital by Delhi Police on day 21 of his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, his wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, demanded that nothing be administered to him “orally or intravenously” without taking consent from his family and doctors who had been keeping a watch on his health for the past 20 days.

In a post on ‘X’, Angmo said she was at Safdarjung Hospital, where her husband is admitted. “I am at Safdarjung hospital in Delhi where @Wangchuk66 has been admitted. Nothing should be administered to him orally or intravenous without take consent from me, his family and his doctors who have been monitoring his health for the past 20 days”, the post read.

On Saturday morning, Sonam Wangchuk was removed from Jantar Mantar and taken to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police. This was theday 21 of his hunger strike to demand accountability and seek the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in connection with the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) paper leaks.

A team of Delhi Police reached Jantar Mantar early Saturday and escorted Wangchuk out of the protest site. Later, he was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital as concerns over his deteriorating health surged due to his prolonged fast.

Soon after, members of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) that has been leading protests against the Centre raised slogans and alleged that Wangchuk was “dragged by the police forcibly“, according to news agency ANI. 

‘Weak Due To Prolonged Fasting, Dehydration’

According to a statement from the Safdarjung Hospital, Sonam Wangchuk is currently stable. However, he requires continuous observation, monitoring and treatment.

“Mr Sonam Wangchuck has been admitted at Safdarjung hospital for required health care. He is weak due to prolonged fasting and dehydration. Although he is currently stable, he requires continuous observation, monitoring and treatment to restore his body parameters”, the statement read.

The development came two after the Delhi High Court directed authorities to conduct regular clinical examinations of the climate activist, observing that “the life of any citizen is precious“. The court also directed daily medical monitoring along with any necessary medical intervention.

Dipke Announces Hunger Strike

After Wangchuk was shifted under medical care, Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the CJP, said that he would begin an indefinite hunger strike, asserting that the protest led by the activist would continue despite his removal from the protest site.

Dipke said his fast would start from Saturday and that the planned march to Parliament on July 20 would take place as scheduled.
