The India men’s cricket team selection committee is reportedly considering a change in the T20I captaincy amid Suryakumar Yadav’s prolonged dip in batting form. The Ajit Agarkar-led panel is expected to meet after the conclusion of IPL 2026 to pick the squad for a two-match T20I series in Ireland, which will be followed by a five-match series in England.
According to timesofindia.com, Shreyas Iyer is not only in line for a return to the T20I side but could also replace Surya as captain. Surya had led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title on home soil in March this year.
While Surya’s captaincy record remains impressive, his struggles with the bat have continued to raise concerns. Despite publicly expressing his desire to lead India at the next
T20 World Cup and the LA Olympics – both scheduled for 2028 – the selection committee could explore other options.
Although he captained India during its historic World Cup triumph, Surya endured a below-par tournament with the bat, scoring 242 runs in nine innings. Notably, 84 of those runs came against the USA in India’s tournament opener.
Surya’s Fitness Concern
The publication, citing sources, also reported that the 35-year-old is dealing with a fitness issue dating back to the previous IPL season, during which he was seen batting and fielding for Mumbai Indians with a “taped right wrist.”
As per the report, during the T20 World Cup, Surya regularly had his right wrist taped after placing cotton pads on it ahead of batting sessions.
A combination of poor batting form, concerns over his wrist, and his age could ultimately influence the selectors’ decision on the T20I captaincy.
Iyer is currently seen as the frontrunner for the role, given his leadership record in the IPL. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024 before leading Punjab Kings to a runners-up finish last year.
He last played a T20I in December 2023.
