Virat Kohli lit up the Holkar Stadium with his 54th ODI hundred on Sunday. After narrowly missing out in the opening fixture in Vadodara, Kohli reached triple figures in the third ODI in Indore as India
were tasked to chase a daunting 338 to win the series.
The milestone came just days after Kohli reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the ICC ODI batters’ rankings. It was his seventh ODI century against New Zealand, helping him surpass Ricky Ponting’s record for the most centuries against the Black Caps in the format.
Kohli brought up his 54th ODI ton in 91 deliveries, during the 40th over of the chase. Unlike his trademark celebrations, the former India captain kept it muted, aware that the target was still far away. Nevertheless, his effort earned widespread appreciation, with teammates and head coach Gautam Gambhir rising to give him a standing ovation for fighting a lone battle in the middle.
