Twinkle Khanna On Navigating The Ups And Downs Of Menopause: ‘I Squat, I Lunge’

Twinkle Khanna has often written about various social and women-centric issues in her column. In her latest piece, she opened up about her struggles with menopause. Twinkle, popularly known as Mrs Funnybones,

shared that she had always believed turning 50 would be a journey of self-discovery, but her experience, she admitted, has been quite different.

In the column for Times of India, she described facing “hot flushes, night sweats, eroding bone mass, thinning skin and a new chin hair.” With her signature wit, Twinkle compared menopause to a “burglar who doesn’t just open your safe and escape with your valuables, it rearranges the furniture to its liking before making its leisurely departure.” She also revealed developing a sensitivity to high-pitched sounds and, for the first time in her life, feeling envious of men.

She noted, “My husband sleeps through building demolitions, barking dogs and even the firecrackers that went off all night on the beach during Chhath Puja…I envy men. Their hormones never desert them, while ours scatter like IIT graduates migrating to Silicon Valley.”

Twinkle Khanna also shared a few things she has been trying to manage the effects of menopause. “I lift weights again after almost 20 years. I squat, I lunge, I do pelvic floor exercises while working on my book. I take magnesium glycinate, ashwagandha, Lion’s mane, Brahmi and yes — primrose oil. I read aloud every morning to retain verbal fluency. I buzz like a bee doing Brahmari. I am Rocky Balboa, with all the sweat and none of the blood.” Twinkle also criticised the taboo around menopause and how it is still being talked about in corners.
