Ferran Torres, a 26-year-old forward who plays for FC Barcelona in La Liga, emerged as Spain’s hero on Sunday (July 19) by scoring the winning goal in the 106th minute of the FIFA World Cup 2026 final against Argentina at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

Torres found the back of the net in the second half of extra time to give Spain a 1-0 lead, and his strike eventually proved to be the difference as La Roja defeated Argentina to win the FIFA World Cup title for the second time in their history.
Interestingly, the goal was Torres’ first of the FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. After going goalless throughout the tournament, the Barcelona star stepped up on the biggest stage and delivered when his team needed
him the most.
With the victory, Spain ended their 16-year wait for a second FIFA World Cup title, having previously lifted the trophy in South Africa in 2010.
Torres emulates Iniesta’s feat
By scoring for Spain in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 against Argentina, Ferran Torres has equalled Andres Iniesta’s record. He became only the second Spanish footballer after Iniesta to score a goal in a FIFA World Cup final.
In the 2010 FIFA World Cup final, Iniesta had also scored for La Roja in the second half of extra time to help Spain secure a 1-0 win over the Netherlands in Johannesburg and lift their maiden FIFA World Cup title.

Ferran Torres is a 26-year-old forward who plays for FC Barcelona in La Liga. He joined Barcelona in the 2021-22 season and has scored 65 goals in 207 matches across all competitions over the last five seasons.

Prior to joining Barcelona, Torres spent a couple of seasons in the Premier League with Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, scoring 16 goals in 43 matches across all competitions.
With Manchester City, he won the Premier League title in the 2020-21 season and also finished as a runner-up in the UEFA Champions League in the same campaign.
Torres also spent three seasons in La Liga with Valencia, where he scored nine goals in 97 matches across all competitions.
As a Spain international, Torres has scored 25 goals in 64 matches since making his debut in 2020.
He was also part of Spain’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In Spain’s match against Costa Rica on November 23, 2022, at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha, Torres scored twice.
He also scored two goals for La Roja during the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers.
