China's Xi Jinping Departs Delhi After BRICS Summit, Ends One-Day India Visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping left New Delhi on Sunday afternoon after attending the BRICS Summit, ending his one-day visit to India, his first in seven years.

Xi departed for the airport after delivering his remarks at Session 2 of the summit. During his visit, he held only one bilateral meeting which was with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Chinese president had arrived in the national capital on Saturday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit.

Xi skips PM Modi’s dinner

Xi did not attend the dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the first day of the BRICS Summit. He was accompanied during his India

visit by a high-level delegation comprising senior government officials and business leaders.

The Chinese president stayed at the Taj Palace in New Delhi. The hotel was placed under extensive security arrangements during his visit.

The hotel was covered by a no-fly zone, with anti-terror and bomb-detection teams deployed. Extensive security checks were also carried out at the property. All rooms at the hotel were sold out.

Modi, Xi among BRICS leaders

On the second day of the summit, PM Modi was seen at the centre, flanked by Russia, China and other world leaders as cameras captured the proceedings.

The 11-member BRICS grouping, including India, China, Russia and Iran, called for calm in the Middle East in New Delhi on Saturday. The members overcame earlier divisions to issue a joint statement.

Xi, who joined PM Modi, Russian, Iranian and other leaders at the summit, said the ongoing war in the Middle East “does not serve the common interests of the international community”.

The joint statement came after earlier differences among BRICS members over the conflict.

Xi’s visit marked his first trip to India in seven years. His engagement with Modi was the only bilateral meeting he held during the visit.

After completing his engagements at the summit, Xi left New Delhi on Sunday afternoon following his remarks at the second session.
