Bhubaneswar, Jul 19 (PTI) Odisha Police has arrested a man for allegedly cheating a woman of Rs 20 lakh on the false promise of providing her a piece of land in Cuttack city, an officer said on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Shasadhar Panda, was arrested on Saturday from Balasore district’s Khaira area, he said.
The arrest was made on the basis of a written complaint lodged by Deeparani Pattnaik of Cuttack city at Mangalabag police station.
Cuttack DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo said Panda had taken Rs 20 lakh from Pattnaik on the promise of transferring and registering a piece of land in her name.
“However, despite repeated requests, the accused neither executed the sale deed of the land nor repaid the money to the woman,” he said.
When Pattnaik
demanded either execution of the sale deed or repayment of the money, Panda allegedly abused her, caught her by the neck and threatened her with dire consequences, the DCP said.
He added that Panda later switched off his mobile phone and fled the area.
“During the course of investigation, analysis of technical data led to the arrest of the accused,” Dnyandeo said.
The DCP said Panda was allegedly a habitual and professional fraudster and was involved in several similar cheating cases in different parts of the state.
He said a Rs 3.50 crore cheating case against Panda was also pending with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of police.
The accused allegedly used the proceeds of such illegal activities to maintain an extravagant lifestyle, the officer added. PTI BBM BBM MNB
