Japan Earthquake: A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck Japan’s Kumamoto prefecture on the southern island of Kyushu on Tuesday, triggering a tsunami warning and prompting emergency alerts across several prefectures in the region.

The earthquake measured at the highest possible level of seven on Japan’s Shindo scale of shaking, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). According to National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 12:57:22 IST with its epicentre located at latitude 32.643°N and longitude 130.985°E at a depth of 70 kilometres.

According to the JMA, the epicentre was located around 4 kilometres southeast of Uki at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, resulting in intense ground shaking.

Residents in

coastal areas have been urged to move to higher ground and follow official evacuation instructions. Broadcaster NHK said that waves of up to that level may already have been recorded.

Additionally, the Japanese government issued emergency earthquake warnings for Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita, and Miyazaki prefectures, all on Japan’s southern Kyushu island.

One video captured the collapse of the stone walls of Kumamoto Castle following strong tremors.

Another clip showed a building intensly shaking as the earthquake stuck the island.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.

Authorities were continuing to assess the situation while monitoring for possible aftershocks.

Japan is among the world’s most earthquake-prone nations due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where multiple tectonic plates converge.
