Icefalls, Dense Clouds, And A Deadly Deluge: Behind The Glacial Collapse Causing Flash Floods In Nepal | Video

Days after the glacial collapse triggered massive floods along the Nepal-Tibet border, newly surfaced footage has provided a rare glimpse into how the disaster unfolded on Langtang Lirung, the highest peak in the Langtang Himal range of the Nepalese Himalayas.

The footage, obtained and verified by The New York Times, captured the moment the glacial collapse occurred as large chunks of ice fell off the ridge of Langtang Lirung, cascading down the hill into Nepal before causing catastrophic floods along the Tibetan border.

The video was captured by a Chinese tour guide, said the report.

Another video captured by a mountaineer showed huge and dense clouds blanketing the valley after the glacial collapse caused the formation of lakes.  Hikers heard a huge crack before ice, rock and debris descended into the valley, with dust clouds forming in the skies, according to The New York Times. 

The lakes now sitting upstream are threatening the ongoing relief-and-rescue operations in both Nepal and Tibet.

Death Toll Climbs To 691

The death toll from devastating floods along the Nepal-Tibet border has climbed to 691, according to the Associated Press. While Nepal has so far reported 675 deaths, 16 casualties in Tibet have been confirmed by authorities.

An 11-member team from India landed in Nepal on Saturday to assist search-and-rescue efforts. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said Sunday that a fourth flight carrying relief materials was also sent to Kathmandu to accelerate the ongoing operations.

In a post on X, EAM Jaishankar wrote: “The fourth Indian flight has touched down in Kathmandu. It brings essential supplies and technical capabilities to support Nepal’s ongoing rescue & relief operations.”

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) of Nepal, meanwhile, issued a fresh flood alert for the Bhote Koshi River, urging local authorities and residents in vulnerable areas to remain on high alert and take precautionary measures to prevent any untoward incidents.
