Days after singer Zubeen Garg’s tragic death, his manager, Siddhartha Sharma, has finally issued a statement clarifying the ownership of the singer’s vast catalogue and the earnings from his creative work. In an open letter that Sarma wrote, he stated that contrary to public perception, the majority of Garg’s 38,000 recorded songs are contractually owned by various production houses and music companies.
“Almost all of Zubeen da’s songs, even the biggest blockbusters, were done before I entered his life. He often lamented how he was shortchanged, with producers and labels earning crores while he received only modest payments. This can be verified with those companies directly,” Sharma wrote.
The manager also revealed that in 2021, Garg decided
to build ownership over some of his later works by establishing Zubeen Garg Music LLP. It is in this business entity that Sarma had also partnered.
“The LLP has generated only a few thousand rupees monthly so far. The entire amount remains in the company account, with no withdrawals. Zubeen da owned 60 per cent of the firm, and I consider it my duty to ensure that his family rightfully inherits this stake,” he added.
Sarma also revealed that all the earnings that Zubeen received as a composer and lyricist were made directly to his personal account and will now be transferred to the singer’s widow, Garima Garg.
Denying allegations of exploiting Zubeen’s trust or finances, Sarma stated, “These rumours are baseless and deeply hurtful. I have cooperated with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing his death and will continue to do so.”
Sarma concluded by requesting Garg’s fans not to spread miscommunication. “This is a request from one human being to another. Let the investigation proceed without fear or prejudice. We owe it to Zubeen da’s memory to pursue truth with dignity,” he said.
SIT Raids Zubeen Garg’s Manager’s Home
Sarma’s statement comes a day after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) raided his residence in Guwahati’s Datalpara area. As reported by India Today, a team of officials arrived at the premises in the morning but waited outside the building for nearly two hours before starting the search.
When the SIT team reached Sharma’s apartment for a search, they found that it was locked. The lock was then broken and a search was conducted in the presence of a magistrate.
Reportedly, Zubeen’s manager and his family have been living in this apartment since 2019. However, neighbours informed that they have not been seen since the day the singer died.
