Large parts of Bengaluru will face a planned disruption in Cauvery water supply for 2 days, on February 5 and February 6, due to emergency maintenance work on major water pipelines. The Bangalore Water
Supply and Sewerage Board has announced that water pumping will be suspended as part of critical linking work, affecting more than 100 localities across the city.
Residents in several south, central and southeast Bengaluru neighbourhoods have been advised to store water in advance to manage the temporary shutdown.
Why Water Supply Is Being Stopped
According to the BWSSB, the disruption is due to essential pipeline work under the Cauvery Water Supply Scheme. The board is carrying out linking and repair work on large 1200 mm and 700 mm diameter pipelines. To complete this safely, pumping stations under Cauvery Stage 1 and Stage 2 will be shut down for 24 hours.
The shutdown will begin at 6:00 am on February 5 and continue until 6:00 am on February 6. During this period, water will not be supplied to areas dependent on these stages of the Cauvery system.
Officials say the maintenance is unavoidable and necessary to ensure long-term stability of the city’s water distribution network.
Areas Likely to Be Affected
The disruption will impact several densely populated residential and commercial areas. Localities expected to face water shortages include Banashankari, Jayanagar, Koramangala, Uttarahalli, Kumaraswamy Layout, ISRO Layout, JP Nagar, Wilson Garden, Shantinagar, Madiwala, Adugodi, Richmond Town and parts of MG Road.
Neighbourhoods such as Padmanabha Nagar, Chikkallasandra, Yelachenahalli, Kanakapura Road, Subramanyapura, Hosakerehalli, Ittamadu, Srinagar, Chamarajapet, Kempegowda Nagar, Sudhama Nagar and Basavanagudi-side layouts are also expected to be affected.
Central and southeast areas including Langford Town, Ashok Nagar, Neelasandra, Austin Town, Vivek Nagar, Ejipura, Domlur, Jogupalya, Kodihalli, Cambridge Layout and Command Hospital surroundings fall under the shutdown zone as well.
In Koramangala, multiple blocks including 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Blocks will see disruption. Institutional areas such as St John’s Hospital and NIMHANS are also listed among the affected zones.
What Residents Should Do
BWSSB has urged residents in all affected areas to store adequate water in advance to meet drinking, cooking and essential household needs. Apartment associations and commercial establishments that rely heavily on Cauvery water have been advised to plan alternative arrangements where possible.
Officials clarified that water supply will be restored gradually after pumping resumes and normal pressure may take some time to stabilise in certain areas.
Temporary Disruption, Essential Work
The board has reiterated that the shutdown is temporary and part of routine infrastructure upkeep required to maintain Bengaluru’s aging water network. Once the maintenance is completed, regular supply is expected to resume without further interruption.
Residents are advised to stay alert for local announcements from BWSSB and plan their water usage carefully during the 2-day period.
