Australian spinner Adam Zampa revealed why he decided not to register for the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League, owing instead to feature in the Pakistan Super League, as he plies his trade for the Karachi Kings.
Zampa revealed that he prioritised his breaks and rest, citing the extended duration of the IPL schedule as the main reason for him opting for the much-shorter PSL.
“My plan was to have a break, but the best part about the PSL was its relatively shorter duration,” the 34-year-old spinner said.
“It’s the same as any other franchise competition, IPL is the only one in the world that goes as long as it does. You can understand why,” he added.
“But I’ve definitely prioritised breaks, and I think the PSL’s duration suited me more. I get
a bit of a break after the PSL before I have to go away and play for Australia. That was always part of the consideration,” the Aussie explained.
The PSL features 8 teams in the competition and is a 44-game tournament, much shorter than the 70-game IPL which boasts as many as 10 sides brimming with talent.
Zampa, who has represented the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants between 2016 and 2017, before joining Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the year 2020. He donned the Rajasthan Royals drip in the year 2023, before appearing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the year 2024. SRH, however, released the seasoned spinner ahead of the auction and the crafty Aussie refrained from registering in the player auction ahead of the season.
Zampa has also cited how the overseas wrist spinners have been rather undervalued in the Indian Premier League, which could have played a part in his decision to not turn up for the auctions.
“Someone with my skill set just don’t get the money and the amount of time IPL takes, IPL didn’t seem a reasonable choice for me so PSL was on my radar and I’m enjoying it,” he had said a couple of days earlier.
