In a major crackdown, the Delhi Police apprehended 25 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants residing in the national capital, officials said on Thursday.
According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP),
Aishwarya Sharma, the operation was carried out in the South East District based on intelligence inputs regarding the presence of foreign nationals residing illegally in the area.
They were nabbed as part of an ongoing campaign to identify and take legal action against undocumented immigrants living in the national capital.
This comes five days after two alleged Bangladeshi nationals were arrested from South Delhi’s Mahipalpur area for staying illegally in the city. Police said the visa of the duo had expired almost a decade ago. Subsequently, they were handed over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).
Earlier in May, Delhi Police said that approximately 900 illegal Bangladeshi nationals residing in the national capital were identified from January to May and would be deported after proper verification. The process of deporting undocumented migrants gained momentum in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, police said.
Within a period of six months, approximately 700 undocumented migrants in Delhi were repatriated to Bangladesh under the Indian government’s ongoing ‘push-back’ strategy, police said.
To encourage public participation in the campaign, Delhi Police has urged citizens to share information with the authorities. The crackdown on undocumented Bangladeshi nationals has intensified across several states.
