India’s real-time payments infrastructure recorded its highest-ever monthly activity in March 2026, underscoring the rapid expansion of digital transactions across the country.
India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), operated by the National Payments Corporation of India, processed 22.64 billion transactions during the month, according to official data. In value terms, transactions reached ₹29.53 lakh crore, marking a significant increase from February’s 20.39 billion transactions worth ₹26.84 lakh crore.
On a daily basis, the platform handled an average of 730 million transactions, with daily transaction values averaging ₹95,243 crore. Year-on-year growth remained strong, with transaction volumes rising 24% and transaction values increasing
19%.
Growth Reflects Wider Digital Adoption
Industry participants attribute the continued rise to deeper penetration of digital payments across both urban and rural India. The steady expansion highlights how UPI has become embedded in routine financial activity, from small retail purchases to larger transactions.
Anand Kumar Bajaj, Founder, MD and CEO of PayNearby, said the sustained growth signals increasing integration of real-time payments into everyday commerce. He noted that adoption is accelerating in smaller towns, supported by assisted digital models that help onboard first-time users and merchants.
Security And Scale Remain Key Focus Areas
Meanwhile, Akash Sinha, Co-founder and CEO of Cashfree Payments, emphasized that the latest figures reinforce UPI’s position as a primary payment method for millions of users.
He added that as transaction volumes scale, maintaining robust security infrastructure becomes increasingly important. Sinha pointed to measures by the Reserve Bank of India, including enhanced authentication norms and proposed safeguards under its payments vision framework, as critical steps to sustain trust in the ecosystem.
