Nearly four decades after the Corleone family last ruled cinema screens, the iconic mafia universe is quietly preparing for another chapter, this time with a surprising shift in perspective. One of Hollywood’s most celebrated franchises is heading back into development, but the spotlight may no longer belong to the men who built the empire.
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures has secured the film rights to Connie, an upcoming sequel novel centred on Connie Corleone, the daughter of Don Vito Corleone from The Godfather universe. The book has been officially authorised by the estate of legendary author Mario Puzo.
The novel is being written by bestselling Italian-American author Adriana Trigiani and is expected to
release in 2027. The report states that Random House Publishing acquired the rights to publish the book after an intense eight-way bidding war.
What makes the development even more interesting for fans is that the story will reportedly revisit the Corleone family saga through Connie’s eyes — offering a rare female perspective inside the famously male-dominated mafia world.
The rights situation surrounding The Godfather franchise has always been complicated. When Paramount originally purchased the screen rights to Puzo’s 1969 novel, the studio secured ownership over future adaptations connected to the franchise. After Puzo’s death in 1999, his heirs released two more novels despite objections from the studio, eventually leading to a legal dispute.
The matter was later settled, allowing the Puzo family to continue publishing new books as long as Paramount retained first rights to adapt them for film.
While the possibility of a fourth Godfather film is already creating buzz online, longtime franchise director Francis Ford Coppola is unlikely to return. A representative for Coppola reportedly told Rambling that it is “unlikely” the 87-year-old filmmaker would helm a female-led continuation of the saga.
Originally published in 1969, The Godfather became a cultural phenomenon almost instantly. Puzo’s novel chronicled the rise and influence of the fictional Corleone crime family and the Five Families operating in post-war New York.
The 1972 film adaptation, directed by Coppola and starring Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, went on to redefine gangster cinema. The film also helped launch the careers of actors including Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton and John Cazale.
The film won three Oscars from 11 nominations and remains widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made. Its 1974 sequel, The Godfather Part II, was equally acclaimed, winning six Academy Awards and introducing audiences to a young Robert De Niro as the younger Vito Corleone — a performance that earned him an Oscar.
Though The Godfather Part III received a more divided response upon release in 1990, the film has steadily built a loyal cult following over the years.
