Patna, Aug 13 (PTI) Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Thursday announced a government job for a family member of Bharat Tiwary, who was allegedly killed in an encounter in Bhojpur district on June 17.
Choudhary said the government would also provide financial assistance to Tiwary’s family.
“Based on the interim report of the judicial inquiry, the Bihar government will provide financial assistance to the family of late Bharat Tiwary and offer a government job to one family member,” he said in a social media post.
Tiwari’s death in the police encounter had triggered a political storm in the state, raising questions over the use of force by police and prompting demands for an independent investigation.
According to the police, Tiwari had opened
fire on officers with an illegal firearm when they attempted to arrest him on June 17.
Police said they retaliated in self-defence, resulting in an encounter in which Tiwari was shot and succumbed to the injuries during treatment.
However, his family alleged that he had surrendered before the shooting and discarded his weapon. They also claimed that purported videos on social media showed that he was unarmed when police opened fire.
A Special Task Force (STF) constable, Akshay Kumar, was recently arrested in connection with Tiwary’s death.
Police said Kumar was the first officer to open fire on Tiwary, followed by others. PTI PKD SOM
