The next instalment set in the world of Weapons is officially in the works. Director Zach Cregger has confirmed that he is developing a prequel centred on the horror film’s wickedly talented occult expert
Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan. The filmmaker revealed that he and Warner Bros. are in talks for the prequel movie, affirming reports that a follow-up has been in the making.
“It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it,” he told Fangoria. Zach continued, “There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bulls–t.” While studios often consider sequels to a film after a success at the box office, the director shared that he had been thinking about an Aunty Gladys prequel even before Weapons hit theatres on August 8. Made on a budget of $40 million, the mystery horror film has grossed over $260 million worldwide. “I was ready,” Zach said, adding, “I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.”
Just days after Weapons’ successful opening weekend, The Hollywood Reporter reported that a prequel to the film was under consideration. According to sources, the storyline will revolve around Aunty Gladys’ history, which was originally cut from the final version of Weapons by Zach. Although it was unclear at the time in what capacity the director would helm the prequel, as he already has two projects in the pipeline.
What’s Next For Director Zach Cregger?
Zach Cregger is currently working on the reboot of Resident Evil for Sony Pictures, based on Capcom’s popular horror video games. The director teased that his version will feature original characters rather than retelling the stories of familiar characters from the games. “I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games,” he told Inverse. Zach has also completed the script for the sci-fi film Flood.
