A young couple sustained serious injuries after jumping from the second floor of a pizza outlet in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district, allegedly to escape harassment by members of a Hindu organisation,
police said on Sunday.
The incident took place on Saturday evening at a pizza shop located on the second floor of a building near Bareilly Morh, under the jurisdiction of Kant police station.
According to police sources, a 21-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were seated together at the outlet when a group of people associated with a Hindu organisation arrived and began questioning them.
The couple reportedly told police they had ordered instant noodles and were waiting for their food when the group started asking them personal questions, including their caste.
After the two said they were Hindus, some members of the group allegedly began recording them on their mobile phones.
Police said the situation caused panic. In an attempt to flee, the young man allegedly pulled out a window grille and jumped from the second floor.
The woman followed moments later. Both suffered serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby private hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi said officers reached the scene soon after receiving information and have begun looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He added that no formal complaint has been lodged so far.
“Once we receive a complaint, strict action will be taken,” the SP said, adding that the matter remains under investigation.
