For Cape Verde, tonight’s FIFA World Cup 2026 opener against Spain is much more than a football match.
It is the culmination of a dream years in the making.
As the African island nation prepares for its first-ever appearance on football’s biggest stage, head coach Bubista admitted the opportunity to face one of the tournament favourites is something he once only imagined.
Spain arrive in the United States carrying enormous expectations. Fresh from their European Championship triumph, Luis de la Fuente’s side boasts a squad the Spanish coach described as the strongest in the competition and is widely tipped to challenge for a second World Cup title.
Cape Verde‘s journey could hardly be more different.
Making their tournament debut after stunning Cameroon
in qualifying, the Blue Sharks have already defied the odds to reach the finals. Now, they are determined to prove they belong among the world’s elite rather than simply making up the numbers.
“Our flag will be flying,” Cape Verde coach Bubista said. “That is the most important thing. We will do our very best so that every Cabo Verdian may feel proud.”
“We’ve been discussing how much we want to enjoy the match and the World Cup. It is an amazing opportunity to show our country to the world. We are very much happy to face Spain in the opener, this is a dream coming true,” he added.
Spain’s threat is obvious. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who dazzled during Euro 2024, is expected to begin the tournament on the bench as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury. Even so, the Barcelona star remains one of the competition’s most talked-about players.
Whether this becomes Yamal’s World Cup or not remains to be seen, Mendes said, noting that the competition is full of exceptional footballers from every corner of the globe. Against one of the world’s strongest teams, Cape Verde can only hope the occasion falls their way and that they seize whatever opportunity comes.
