Star India cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi currently risks disciplinary trouble after his explosive post-match clash with Sri Lankan cricketers during the Tri-Nation A Series in the Island Nation.
A record-breaking IPL 2026 campaign had catapulted Sooryavanshi into the spotlight, leaving selectors with little choice but to include him in not one, but three T20I teams.
But Sooryavanshi found himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons on Monday, tarnishing his growing reputation after becoming involved in a physical altercation with a Sri Lanka A cricketer after the ill-tempered conclusion of the tri-series game.
Sooryavanshi, who didn’t face the first ball of the Super Over, managed six runs from the three balls he faced, including a four. But
his brief cameo wasn’t enough to steer India A to a win.
As Sooryavanshi and his batting partner Suryansh Shedge walked past the jubilant Sri Lankan cricketers, who had already started celebrating after the final ball, a verbal exchange, involving Kagutha Mathulan, according to reports, appeared to spark Sooryavanshi’s reaction.
Television footage seemed to show an agitated Sooryavanshi shoving a Sri Lankan cricketer, who in turn moved towards him, threatening to escalate the confrontation. Senior Sri Lanka international Niroshan Dickwella intervened, stepping between the cricketers and helping defuse the situation before it could spiral further.
This wasn’t the only flashpoint involving Sooryavanshi during the game. Earlier, after captain Tilak Varma expressed frustration over a no-ball call on the final ball of Sri Lanka A’s Super Over innings, Sooryavanshi, already padded up, also approached the umpire and was seen in a brief exchange.
Sooryavanshi was guided away from the situation by head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar.
While the exact circumstances that triggered the confrontation are still unclear, Sooryavanshi could face disciplinary action. India star Virat Kohli was once fined 20% of his match fee and handed a demerit point for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct after an aggressive shoulder-to-shoulder collision and verbal exchange during a 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test.
