India’s T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill, on Sunday, September 14, dedicated his side’s seven-wicket win against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Asia Cup in Dubai to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and the Indian army, after a match that was played five months after the gruesome attack.
Chasing a paltry 128, India hardly broke a sweat. Even after Gill (10) was dismissed and Abhishek Sharma departed inside the fourth over, captain Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma (31 off 31 balls) did not look in any hurry while adding 56 runs for the third wicket.
After Varma was dismissed in the 13th over, Suryakumar joined forces with Shivam Dube and added 34 runs for the fourth wicket to take India over the line.
“Today’s win is dedicated to the victims
of Pahalgam and to our brave armed forces who continue to safeguard us. The spirit of India lives on both on and off the field. Jai Hind 🇮🇳,” Gill tweeted in the wee hours of Monday.

Earlier, Suryakumar lost the toss and declined to shake hands with his counterpart, Salman Ali Agha, but remained in control throughout as the opposition batters struggled from the very first legal ball.
Pakistan opener Saim Ayub fell to it, dismissed for a golden duck by Hardik Pandya. In the next over, ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah removed the previous game’s top scorer, Mohammad Haris (3), who attempted a pick-up pull, only for Pandya to return the favour with a well-judged catch at fine leg.
Sahibzada Farhan (40 off 44 balls) did manage to smack Bumrah for two sixes, but struggled against the Indian spinners, with dot balls piling up.
