Star India all-rounder Deepti Sharma, who was awarded the Player of the Tournament in the Women’s ODI World Cup, has said that although it took the team a very long time to win the title, an achievement
comes to one only when God has planned it for them.
The victory over South Africa on Sunday night came after years of disappointment and heartbreak.
Deepti starred with a five-for and a crucial 58 in the all-important final. She took 22 wickets and scored 215 runs in total to earn the player of the tournament award.
“I am feeling really good, since the day we played the first game of the World Cup, I have performed exactly how I wanted to play as a senior player. There cannot be anything better than giving such a good performance in the final and lifting the trophy,” Deepti said while speaking to PTI.
“It took us really long to win the World Cup, but what God has written for you happens only at the destined time and I think it was written to take place in India,” Deepti added.
The moment India sealed the victory over South Africa in faraway Navi Mumbai, her family and neighbours erupted in celebration back home, bursting crackers, sharing sweets and rejoicing in the triumph.
Deepti’s father, Shri Bhagwan Sharma, said that it was a moment of immense pride when his daughter lifted the World Cup trophy.
“It was a feeling beyond words. We watched the entire match together as a family and now we are eagerly waiting for Deepti to return home. Once she arrives, we will celebrate her achievement in a big way,” Bhagwan said while speaking to PTI.
“Deepti has made our family and the entire nation proud. The credit for her success goes to her brother Sumit, who taught her cricket from childhood. Sumit had travelled to Mumbai to watch the final and cheer for his sister,” Deepti’s mother Sushila said.
