Star Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis have been ruled out of the first ODI against India on October 19 in Perth, with left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann and wicketkeeper Josh Phillippe called in as replacements for the game.
Zampa will miss the Perth ODI because of paternity leave, while Inglis remains sidelined with a calf strain. Philippe is all set to make his ODI wicketkeeping debut, with Alex Carey playing Sheffield Shield cricket to prepare for the upcoming Ashes.
Inglis has been ruled out of the second ODI in Adelaide next Thursday as well, when Carey will return to the team. However, Australia remain hopeful the former will be fit for the third game in Sydney on October 25.
Zampa has chosen to remain
at home in northern New South Wales as his wife, Harriet, is in the final stages of pregnancy with their second child. With the due date approaching and Perth being a difficult location to travel back from, he has opted out of the game to stay close to his family.
Zampa could return for the second and third ODIs in Adelaide and Sydney, as travel from those cities back home is shorter and more manageable. He remains available for the five-match T20I series that follows, with all matches scheduled on the East Coast.
Kuhnemann has been called up for Sunday’s game in Perth and is all set to play his first ODI in three years and his first on home soil, having featured in four matches during Australia’s 2022 tour of Sri Lanka.
Kuhnemann has been a constant presence in Australia’s teams throughout the winter, travelling with the side for the World Test Championship final, the three-Test and five-T20I tour of the Caribbean, the home white-ball series against South Africa and the three-match T20I tour of New Zealand.
