The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licences of the canteen at BMC-run Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central and the well-known Olympia Coffee House in Colaba over violations of food safety and hygiene standards.
The action against both establishments was taken on September 16, 2026. While the Nair Hospital canteen was found to have serious food safety and hygiene violations during an inspection, the action against Olympia Coffee House followed a consumer complaint received under the “Safe Food Safe Maharashtra” campaign.
Nair Hospital Canteen Licence Suspended
The Maharashtra FDA inspected the canteen at Nair Hospital, Mumbai Central, on September 16 and found serious violations of food safety and hygiene standards.
Taking into consideration the health and safety of patients and citizens, the FDA suspended the canteen’s licence with immediate effect. Further legal action in the matter is underway.
Olympia Coffee House Faces FDA Action
The FDA also took action against M/s Olympia Coffee House in Colaba based on a consumer complaint. The establishment’s Food Licence No. 11519001000511 was suspended forthwith.
During the inspection, officials found several food safety and hygiene violations on the premises.
These included a urinal in the food storage area, unhygienic food preparation and utensil-washing facilities, food being handled directly on the floor, and the use of unclean water.
Officials also found an infestation of cockroaches and flies, meat blood residues inside the refrigerator and improper segregation of raw vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.
34 Of 35 Food Handlers Lacked Required Training
The FDA also found that damaged wooden chopping boards were being used and that food handlers were not wearing appropriate protective clothing.
Of the 35 food handlers, 34 had not undergone the required food safety training. Mandatory water testing reports and essential sanitation records were also not available during the inspection.
Establishment Directed To Stop Food Activities
In view of the deficiencies and their potential risk to food safety and public health, the FDA suspended Olympia Coffee House’s food licence under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, read with Regulation 2.1.8(4) of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.
During the suspension period, the establishment has been directed to stop all activities related to the purchase, preparation, storage, sale and distribution of food.
Further action will be considered only after the deficiencies are completely rectified and the premises undergo a satisfactory re-inspection.
