Buying a medium-sized shirt or a pair of jeans may soon become a lot less confusing in India. The Centre is close to introducing a national apparel sizing framework that aims to standardise clothing measurements across brands, ensuring that commonly used labels such as Small (S), Medium (M) and Large (L) correspond to uniform body measurements rather than varying from one retailer to another.
The move is expected to bring much-needed consistency to India’s ready-to-wear apparel market, where shoppers often find themselves trying multiple sizes across different brands despite choosing the same size label. The proposed framework is based on extensive anthropometric research conducted specifically on Indian body types and is designed to improve
garment fit while making shopping, particularly online, far more predictable.
The Ministry of Textiles is in the final stages of developing the framework, with discussions centred on adopting a standard alphabetical sizing system similar to those used in Europe and the United States. While the broad size categories have reportedly been finalised, officials are now working on defining the acceptable measurement variations within each size before the standards are formally notified.
The initiative builds on the government’s INDIAsize project, launched to create body-size standards tailored specifically to Indian consumers. As part of the project, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), in collaboration with industry partners, used safe 3D body-scanning technology to collect measurements from more than 25,000 people between the ages of 15 and 65 across multiple cities. The resulting database reflects the diversity of Indian body shapes rather than relying on Western sizing systems.
For shoppers, the biggest advantage is likely to be consistency. Today, a medium-sized garment from one brand can fit very differently from a medium in another, leading to trial-and-error purchases, fitting-room frustration and higher return rates for online orders. A standardised sizing system is expected to make it easier for consumers to identify the right fit regardless of where they shop.
The apparel industry is also expected to benefit. Standard body measurements can help manufacturers streamline pattern development, improve production efficiency and reduce size-related exchanges and returns. Retailers, meanwhile, could offer customers greater confidence while shopping across physical stores and e-commerce platforms.
The framework is intended to reflect Indian body proportions rather than simply adapting UK or US size charts, marking a significant step towards creating a sizing system designed specifically for the country’s population. Once implemented, it could fundamentally change how ready-to-wear clothing is designed, manufactured and sold in India.
