Gurugram, Sep 8 (PTI) A two-year-old girl was crushed to death by a car while playing outside her home in Sector 5 here, while her four-year-old sister escaped unhurt, police said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Monday night and was captured on CCTV footage, which showed a car turning into the street and running over the girl.
According to police, the girl’s mother was standing nearby when the accident occurred. The driver briefly stepped out of the car but fled the spot, leaving the vehicle behind, they said.
Police reached the spot after receiving information and subsequently arrested the driver, identified as Jatin, 31, a resident of Part 6 in Sector 5. The car was also impounded.
According to a complaint filed by the girl’s father, Virendra
Tiwari, he was out for a walk with his wife Pooja and their daughters, Chhavija, 4, and Adrija, 2, after dinner on Monday.
Around 9 pm, Jatin, who lives on the same street, arrived in a Volkswagen Taigun. The car allegedly ran over Adrija while taking a turn, the complaint said.
The family immediately rushed the girl to a private hospital, where doctors declared her dead, Tiwari said.
Police said the girl’s body was sent to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination and a case was registered based on her father’s complaint.
Inspector Satyawan, SHO of Sector 5 police station, said the accused was returning from a friend’s house when the incident occurred.
“The victim’s house is located at a street corner, where the child was sitting and playing. As the accused was taking a turn, the vehicle ran over the child because visibility on the driver’s side was obstructed. We are questioning the accused,” he said.
The CCTV footage showed the child playing in the street while her mother spoke to another woman nearby. The car then turned into the street and ran over the girl, following which her mother rushed to pick her up, police said.
