A female athlete’s decision to continue racing for nearly an hour after experiencing faecal incontinence during the HYROX Beijing event has triggered a heated debate, with users divided over hygiene and the responsibility of event organisers
The incident reportedly took place during the Ulike HYROX Beijing event on September 12. According to a viral social media post, the athlete continued participating in an effort to complete the event and secure a ranking.
While some viewers acknowledged that losing control of bodily functions can happen during intense physical activity, the incident drew criticism because of concerns over what happened after the accident.
The viral post claimed that the contamination affected parts of the track, mats and shared
equipment, prompting questions about whether the race should have been stopped or whether the athlete should have withdrawn.
The debate quickly shifted from the athlete’s personal determination to the responsibility of organisers to ensure that other competitors were not exposed to potentially unhygienic conditions. Some users argued that perseverance should not come at the expense of the health and safety of fellow participants.
The incident also prompted discussion about the meaning of sportsmanship. While continuing despite physical discomfort was viewed by some as an example of determination, others felt that allowing a contaminated area to remain in use compromised fair competition and basic hygiene standards.
The organisers later reportedly issued a statement saying that the venue had been sealed off for disinfection. The post, shared by user @iPaulCanada, gained significant attention online, with users expressing sharply contrasting opinions.
One user wrote, “This is indeed inappropriate; the contestant should withdraw from the competition immediately,” while another commented, “Pretty disgusting. Does the world really need you to show off your sportsmanship like this?”
A third user questioned the idea of continuing at any cost, saying, “The essence of sportsmanship is “winning fairly,” not “winning at all costs.” Athletes may lose control, but event management cannot follow suit and lose control,”
Another user expressed a stronger criticism of athletes prioritising results, writing, “I’ve always despised athletes who abandon morals for the sake of results.”
The unusual circumstances also prompted sarcastic reactions. One user wrote, “Other competitors finishing the race by following the scent is also a kind of sportsmanship,” while another said, “This isn’t the Olympics if you shit yourself get off the track😮💨”
“I’m sorry, but if an Indian had done it, everyone would have trolled us and they would have been pulled off the track ahead of time,” said one more user.
However, some users stressed that the focus should not be on shaming the athlete for experiencing incontinence. One commenter said, “Everyone is missing the point… This isn’t a ‘personal hygiene’ issue (incontinence can happen in racing etc) but a serious biohazard violation & regardless of the organisers saying they ‘disinfected’ the affected areas, she should have removed herself immediately.”
After clear biocontamination and medical procedures were carried out, the organiser drew a line and stressed that nobody should insult, threaten and embarrass any athlete. “There is no place in our community for threats of violence or encouragement to harm an athlete”, the organiser said, according to Mothership.
