Former India captain Rohit Sharma was seen sharing a congratulatory hug with Shreyas Iyer, who was earlier on Saturday, June 6, made the Indian T20I skipper. The latter, who was till very recently not a part of India’s shortest-format team, replaced Suryakumar Yadav in the side.
Iyer has returned to the national T20I team for the first time after competing against Australia in Bengaluru on December 3, 2023.
Rohit met Iyer ahead of the T20 Mumbai game between Suryakumar’s Triumphs Knights MNE and Iyer’s SoBo Mumbai Falcons. Watch the video here:

Put in to bat first, the Knights were reduced to 19/2 in the fifth over before Nutan Kumar Goel and Suryakumar steadied the innings.
The match between Suryakumar and Iyer’s teams has come on the very day when the latter replaced Suryakumar in the Indian team, not just in the batting lineup but also as captain.
“With regards to Shreyas, we have seen what he has done over the last few years, leading different franchises. (He) won the final once and from there a tougher season this year after a great start,” chief selector Ajit Agarkar said at a press conference.
“His own performances have been really good. He was quite close to getting into the (T20) World Cup squad as well. With Surya still there, there was no room for him, so he is, in my opinion, a stand-out candidate with enough experience now having led in the T20 format; this is obviously a different challenge,” Agarkar added.
Iyer’s strong IPL leadership, leading KKR to the 2024 title and PBKS to the 2025 final, plus consistent runs with the bat, has led selectors to pick him as the successor to T20 WC 2026-winning captain Suryakumar.
